Traditional computer hard disks will be boosted at the expense of developing solid state drives (SSDs) thanks to a new data processing technology from Intel.
Researcher Objective Analysis says Intel's new speed-boosting Braidwood technology will boost the position of magnetic hard drives in the data storage systems marketplace. This will be at the expense of fledgling flash-based SSD-based systems.
SSD systems were predicted to take a big slice of the market thanks to their faster speeds, but magnetic disks will now be given a solid lifeline from Intel.
Storage systems integrator Origin Storage said Braidwood - which was first announced this summer - increases the speed of PC boot-up times, makes applications launch more quickly and improves the overall speed of a computer.
Andy Cordial, Origin managing director, said, "Objective Analysis makes the interesting prediction that Braidwood will boost magnetic drives at the expense of solid state drives (SSDs).
"This is good news for companies planning to use encrypted technology to secure their data, as it's a lot easier to integrate encryption with magnetic drives than their SSD equivalents."
Cordial added, "There's no doubting that as SSD capacities get larger over time and their cost per gigabyte reduces, they will increase their market share in the longer term. For the time being though this report shows magnetic drives will remain top of the tree."
