The British Computer Society (BCS) (www.bcs.org) has launched a new Green IT qualification designed to help IT professionals and firms gain an in-depth understanding of the environmental issues associated with IT.
The BCS said the Foundation Certificate in Green IT is a three day course which provides candidates with a fundamental understanding of the importance of IT when trying to achieve an organisation's green objective.
It provides them with an understanding of regulations, legislation and policies; carbon energy accounting and how to create a green IT strategy. It also covers business benefits, end to end costing, emissions and energy efficiencies, procurement, and lifecycle and disposal planning.
In addition, BCS has announced its intention to pilot the EU Code of Conduct for Data Centre Operators Practitioner Certificate. This qualification will set an international standard for IT professionals in understanding energy efficiency, irrespective of what discipline they practice within the industry.
BCS qualifications director Pete Bayley, said of the Foundation course, "Organisations need to know how to comply with ever tightening legislation, how they can create significant cost-efficiencies, and how to balance the internal and external economic drivers they face.
"We're confident that individuals will complete this qualification able to develop a strategy that will bring significant benefit to their business."
Further details on the two courses can be viewed at www.bcs.org/greenit.
