India has its first paperless e-court in Delhi, reports India Today.
The Delhi High Court will use digital technology to help speed up the delivery of justice. The project includes court files being recorded in an electronic format on computers for access, and court records being stored on CDs.
Paperless courts have become a necessity because of storage and maintenance problems. Currently, reports India Today, about a third of the area of the Delhi High Court is used for storage of files and other relevant documents.
Initially, only civil cases will be covered by the electronic document management project. As well as on operational grounds, the court is also backing the project to meet environmental needs, in an effort to slash paper usage.
Oral depositions to the court will be recorded on audio and video devices, and will be authenticated using digital signatures usingĀ signature pads and fingerprint readers. Petitions will be filed through the internet or via e-kiosks on court premises.
