I can't say with any degree of qualification but on the few occasions where i have used OCR i have found it to be useful but not totally reliant.

I had a document that had been printed, but the original file had been lost. Rather than retyping it i used OCR. What i found was that for the majority of the text it had no problem but for less common words or brand names it struggled. It also had a bad habit of confusing certain letters, 'r' 'n' and 'm' especially.

I found that i still had to proof-read the document to ensure it was correct. I think it was faster than retyping, but not if it had been a truely technical document, such as a dissertation or similar.

i wouldn't know per se, i would assume that the overall impact would remain pretty much the same. however the benefit would appear in house. with the reduced computer needs for a business the energy consumption will be less. whether the company would see an actual saving i suppose would be countered by the increased cost of more bandwidth.

If you wanted to find actual figures i would start looking in scientific journals or publications such as New Scientist

Thought i'd just stick some of my thoughts regarding cloud computing out there.

The concept of cloud computing is an excellent one, the thought that i can access my files and even my programs from any machine in any location is great, and as a concept i can see how companies would be attracted to it.

My concern is that the potential for things to go wrong is still there, as it is in any system, but if the data is lost there is no local copy. This is what happened to T-mobile's Sidekick mobile phone in october of last year, a server fault meant that users lost data that was stored remotely.

That's bad enough on a mobile phone but imagine the lost revenue if it had happened to a business.

To conclude i would say that cloud computing is an excellent idea, but not one to rely on just yet

DMS can help an organization with its document and information management by providing a well indexed document

storage system from which information can easily be found and retrieved.

Hello All,
I'm running a small experiment on the success rates of OCR/ICR data capture of hand printed documents.
This is really a test of human ability to successfully capture this kind of data more than a test of software capabilities.
I was wondering if anybody out there has experience in this kind of data capture?

Our company decided to organize paperless office and introduced electronic document management system DocumentLite. This system useful for registration of documents, electronic document moving among the staff, document coordination, control of the document passing and other tasks , search of documents in the system.

The system has open source.

Hi one consideration may be whether you have invested in a server yet for your business.
If not, then a SAAS type DM solution could be a great lower cost option for you.

I've been involved in several major litigation cases, as a consultant / expert, to do with IT&T issues. The cost and complexity of the legal "discovery" process has paid for the acquisition and implementation of a DM system without consideration of the other benefits and ROI considerations. I'm now involved in a start-up business, on a much smaller scale than the large corporates that I acted for as a consultant. What's available and cost effective in DM at the small business end of the market?

Has anyone done, or know of any studies on the environmental benefits of cloud computing over in-house servers?

Hi, There are a number of document management systems for small start-ups. It just depends upon what exactly you're after (e.g. are you after a basic imaging system and would you like it to be integrated or standalone?) and which country your business is located. Is your start-up business also a legal firm?
